"As you view these works of art, my wish is that you are provoked to explore the past or imagine the future."
Julia "Kito" Kirtley is a multidisciplinary artist from Compton, California. She received her BA in Interior Design from Pratt Institute and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her motif surrounds abstract renditions of urban architecture – something she refers to as “cityscapes." Recycling is also a part of her aesthetic and many of her works use found canvas, mirrors, fabrics and other materials. Another reoccurring theme in her work is based on the kinetic relationship between sound, movement and painting. She gathers inspiration from the mysterious underground house dance community, of which she’s documented via photo, video and performance art pieces for over 20 years.
Julia is also an arts educator spending 10+ years working with underserved youth in the NYC Public School System. Her Red Lotus Arts LLC is focused on community healing arts.
After being diagnosed in Dec 2021 with breast cancer, I have dedicated myself to working with patients and staff who are affected by, healing with, or supporting someone with, BREAST CANCER. I have recently been facilitating art therapy classes with patients and staff at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist where I received exceptional treatment. I was recently featured on several news outlets highlighting my story. I decided to share my story in hopes of helping others who may be affected by healing from breast cancer. My goal is to create a Mobil Art Unit (a customer van) so that I can make my self accessible to patients in and around all boroughs.
